FAQs

Do you have any questions? We have an answer. Take a look at our list of FAQs here. Perhaps we can help you already. If you cannot find the answer you want here, our central service point will of course be happy to help you. If questions arise about your machine, you can also find answers in the operating instructions for your device. You can download these here. Furthermore, you will find a whole range of tutorials and service videos on our YouTube channel. From initial operation to descaling, you can see all the possibilities of your NIVONA step-by-step. Our YouTube channel can be found here.

The coffee comes out of the outlet on my NIVONA only one drop at a time, so it takes a very long time to make coffee. Why might that be?

The coffee is probably too finely ground. Please set the grind size to be coarser. (Caution: adjust the grind size only when the grinder is running.) When making coffee via the powder shaft, please ensure that the coffee powder you use is not too finely ground. Easy to use and to clean, conveniently and intuitively: this is why the brewing unit on our machines is removable for cleaning.

When I use my NIVONA SPUMATORE the milk is only warm and no longer frothed. What can I improve?

Please clean the SPUMATORE frother thoroughly (after dismantling), by following the relevant advice in the operating instructions. It is important here to remove any sticky milk residues, especially in the upper suction valve of the SPUMATORE. Ensure that you clean the machine regularly and use cold water (to prevent clogging by protein in the milk).

Which material is used to make the coffee grinder in NIVONA devices?

The grinder is made of hardened steel and it is a high-quality, conical grinder.

Is it normal for a little water to run into the drip tray after each time coffee is dispensed and for there to be water in the collecting tray?

Yes, that is normal. After each time coffee is dispensed, the residual water from the coffee grounds and the excess pressure when making coffee are channelled through the inside of the machine and to the collecting tray in the form of water.

Is it necessary to clean and descale an espresso machine?

Yes, only a well cleaned and descaled espresso machine can ensure maximum coffee pleasure. Please follow the instructions on your machine display and the operating instructions for your device.

Which descaler is suitable for descaling fully automatic coffee machines?

Please use our Premium liquid descaler or commercially available, preferably liquid descalers especially for fully automatic coffee machines. Please never descale with citric acid, vinegar or even formic acid, as this will destroy the sealing rings inside the device.

How can I adjust the coffee strength?

When making it, you can of course initially choose between mild, normal and strong coffee at the touch of a button (the ground quantity is adjusted here, between 7 and 11 g coffee per cup). The grind size should be set within the medium range. Then try an espresso or coffee. If the espresso is too strong or too weak for you, alter the ground quantity accordingly (this means e.g. set to normal or mild if it is too strong, or select more coffee grounds i.e. normal or strong if it is too weak). Once you have made this adjustment, fine tuning can be achieved with the grind size. (Caution: adjust the grind size only when the grinder is running.) Now, for a more intense flavour, e.g. for an espresso, gradually reduce the grind size or set it coarser for milder coffee – until you achieve the optimum result for your taste.

Can I also fill the water tank of my NIVONA machine with mineral water, to avoid limescale?

No, we do not recommend that, as mineral water also contains minerals, calcium and magnesium, which can cause limescale. Instead, we recommend clear tap water as well as regular descaling and, if necessary, use with a CLARIS fresh water filter.

Despite having an empty drip and used coffee tray, my machine still shows “Empty trays”. Why is that?

There are 2 metal contacts at the back end of the drip tray, and the space between them must be clean and dry. Please also ensure that the counterparts in the machine housing are equally dry and cleaned of any residues.
